Rajinikanth's Vedic Chart: Exalted Mars, and Why the Moon Is Uncertain

The one placement almost everyone states too confidently

Most pages give Rajinikanth a Capricorn Moon. That is probably right, but it is not certain, and the uncertainty is unusually large for a celebrity chart.

Running 12 December 1950 across the full day, his Moon crosses from the last degree of Sagittarius into Capricorn in the first hour or so after midnight. If he was born in that narrow window, the Moon sign is Sagittarius. For the remaining twenty-three hours it is Capricorn.

The nakshatra is less stable still. It is Uttara Ashadha through the morning and early afternoon, then moves into Shravana around the middle of the afternoon. So a morning birth and an evening birth give different nakshatras, and since the nakshatra lord sets the entire Vimshottari dasha sequence, those two readings would have completely different timelines. One would start life in a Sun period, the other in a Moon period.

That is a large fork to leave unmentioned, and most pages leave it unmentioned.

What is solid: an exalted Mars and a Jyeshtha Sun

Mars sits at about 4 degrees of Capricorn, which is its sign of exaltation, and it holds there across the entire day. Exalted Mars is the planet at full strength: drive, discipline, physical courage and the capacity to sustain effort. Of everything in this chart it is the least ambiguous and the most striking.

The Sun is at roughly 26.5 degrees of Scorpio, in Jyeshtha. Jyeshtha is the eldest star, ruled by Mercury, and the tradition associates it with seniority, protection of others, and a certain weight of responsibility that arrives with position. Sun in Scorpio in Jyeshtha is stable all day and needs no birth time.

Interestingly, Mars is exalted in Capricorn while the Moon, if Capricorn, sits in the same sign a couple of degrees away. A Moon with an exalted Mars is the basis of the Chandra Mangal combination, which the tradition connects with drive and with earned prosperity. But that reading depends entirely on the Moon actually being in Capricorn, which brings us back to the birth time.

What a missing birth time costs here

The same list as always, but heavier in this case. No ascendant, so no houses, no house-based yogas, no Navamsa, no divisional charts.

And because the Moon's nakshatra is genuinely in question, the dasha timeline is not merely imprecise here, it is undetermined. For most charts a missing birth time shifts dasha dates by months. For this one it can change which mahadasha the life began in altogether, because Uttara Ashadha is ruled by the Sun and Shravana by the Moon. Those are different sequences, not different offsets.

So if you see a page giving Rajinikanth's current mahadasha with dates, that page has picked a birth time. It may have picked a reasonable one. It has not told you it picked.

How to read a celebrity chart honestly

The useful habit, whoever the subject is, is to sort every claim into three buckets before you accept it.

Sign placements and dignities usually survive an unknown birth time, because the slower planets barely move in a day. Those are the safe claims, and for this chart they include the exalted Mars, the Jyeshtha Sun, Jupiter in Aquarius and Saturn in Virgo.

The Moon is the borderline case. It covers about thirteen degrees a day, so it holds its sign most of the time but not always, and its nakshatra frequently changes mid-day. Always check where in the sign it falls before trusting a Moon-based claim.

Houses, the ascendant, divisional charts and dasha dates are the unsafe bucket. They need the time, and for most public figures the time is not recorded.
