Narendra Modi's Vedic Chart: What Can Be Said Without a Birth Time

Why this page looks different from the others you will find

Search for this chart and you will get dozens of confident readings, most with an ascendant, a full set of houses, and predictions attached to them. Wikipedia records his date and place of birth and no time at all, and I could not find a primary record of one anywhere.

That matters more than it sounds. The ascendant moves through a whole sign roughly every two hours, so an undocumented birth time means twelve possible ascendants and twelve different house structures. Every house-based claim, which is most of what those pages consist of, rests on a number somebody chose.

So this page gives what the date alone can support. That turns out to be a fair amount, because sign placements, dignities and most nakshatras barely move across a day. What it will not do is name a lagna and then read a life off it.

The placements that hold regardless of time

Computed for 17 September 1950 at Vadnagar, using the Lahiri ayanamsha of 23.16 degrees, then re-run across the full day to check what stays put.

The Moon is in Scorpio for all twenty-four hours, which means it is debilitated throughout. Scorpio is the Moon's sign of fall in Jyotish. In the tradition this is not read as a defect of character but as a placement whose significations, the mind and the emotional nature, operate under intensity rather than ease, and classical texts allow for Neecha Bhanga, a cancellation of debilitation, when certain conditions are met. Whether those conditions apply here depends on house positions, which we do not have. The nakshatra is Anuradha from roughly 02:00 onward, and Vishakha only for the first couple of hours of the date.

Mars sits in Scorpio in its own sign, which is a dignified placement, and Mercury is exalted in Virgo while retrograde. Exalted Mercury is the strongest placement that planet has. Retrograde is a separate condition and some classical schools treat retrograde planets as gaining strength rather than losing it, which is one of the live disagreements in the tradition rather than a settled point.

Saturn is at the very end of Leo, and Venus is in Leo in Purva Phalguni.

The Sun sits on a boundary, which is worth knowing

His sidereal Sun computes to 0.64 degrees of Virgo. That is barely inside the sign, and it is the one figure on this page I would not treat as settled.

The reason is the ayanamsha. Lahiri, the Indian government standard, gives 0.64 degrees of Virgo. Ayanamshas that run about a degree larger, such as Fagan-Bradley, would place the same Sun at roughly 29.8 degrees of Leo instead, in the previous sign entirely. Ayanamshas that run smaller, such as Raman, push it a little further into Virgo.

So depending on which system a chart was cast with, you will see his Sun described as Virgo or as Leo, and both are internally consistent. This is a textbook case of why two Vedic sites disagree, and it is a useful reminder that a placement near a sign boundary is a weaker fact than one sitting mid-sign, even when the arithmetic is exact.

Under the Lahiri standard used across Indian astrology, it is Virgo, in Uttara Phalguni.

What is not knowable, and what this page will not do

Without a birth time: the ascendant, all twelve houses, every house-based yoga, the divisional charts including the Navamsa, and the Vimshottari dasha dates. The dasha sequence depends on the Moon's exact position within Anuradha, and across a day that position moves enough to shift the timeline by several months either way.

That rules out most of what people actually want from a chart like this, and I would rather say so than manufacture it.

This page also does not offer predictions about elections, terms of office, or political outcomes, and does not draw character conclusions about a living person from planetary positions. Both are common in this genre and neither is something a birth chart can support. Debilitation and exaltation are technical terms about a planet's dignity in a sign. They are not verdicts about a human being, and treating them as such is the error the whole celebrity-chart genre is built on.
