A.R. Rahman's Vedic Chart: Exalted Jupiter, Uncertain Moon

Exalted Jupiter in Pushya

The clearest feature is Jupiter at about 7.9 degrees of Cancer, its sign of exaltation, in the nakshatra Pushya, and retrograde.

Jupiter is the karaka of wisdom, teaching, expansion and grace, and Cancer is where it operates at full strength. Pushya is traditionally regarded as one of the most auspicious of the 27 nakshatras, ruled by Saturn and associated with nourishment and sustenance. Exalted Jupiter in Pushya is a genuinely strong combination and it holds across the whole birth date, so it does not depend on the time.

The retrogression is a separate condition from the dignity. Schools disagree about whether retrograde planets gain or lose strength, which is one of the open disputes in the tradition rather than a settled rule, so I would not stack a confident reading on top of it.

The Moon is the part nobody should state confidently

At midnight on 6 January 1967 his Moon sits at about 19.5 degrees of Libra in Swati. By the end of the same day it has moved to about 3.2 degrees of Scorpio in Vishakha.

So the sign is genuinely in question. A birth in the earlier part of the day gives a Libra Moon, a birth late in the day gives Scorpio, and the nakshatra shifts from Swati to Vishakha somewhere in between. Swati is ruled by Rahu and Vishakha by Jupiter, which means the two readings would begin life in entirely different mahadashas and follow entirely different timelines.

That is the single most consequential unknown in this chart, and pages that state a Moon sign for him without mentioning it are overstating what the date supports.

His Mars, at about 23 degrees of Virgo, also changes nakshatra during the day, which is a smaller version of the same problem.

The stable remainder

Everything else stays put. His Sun is at about 21.9 degrees of Sagittarius in Purva Ashadha, ruled by Venus. Mercury is also in Sagittarius, at 14.8 degrees, in the same nakshatra.

Venus is at about 5.9 degrees of Capricorn in Uttara Ashadha. Saturn sits at 0.96 degrees of Pisces, right at the start of the sign, which is close enough to the Aquarius boundary to be worth flagging: a different ayanamsha could move it.

The nodes run Rahu in Aries in Bharani and Ketu in Libra in Swati, both retrograde as they always are.

As with every chart on this site where no birth time exists, the ascendant, the houses, the divisional charts and the dasha dates are all unavailable, and here the dasha is doubly so because the Moon's nakshatra itself is undetermined.
