The 7th house is the house of partnership, marriage and the people you commit to. The sign on it describes the style of partner you are drawn to and the kind of relationship that suits you. The lord of that sign, and the house it sits in, is traditionally read as the setting in which the relationship arrives, which is why the table below is one of the most useful lookups in marriage astrology.

Planets placed in the 7th colour the partnership. Jupiter there is read as a supportive, principled partner. Saturn tends to delay marriage and to describe a serious, often more mature partner, and a relationship that deepens with time. Mars brings energy and friction that needs managing, which is the root of Mangal dosha. Rahu points toward the unconventional: a partner from a different background, culture or country. An empty 7th house does not mean no marriage

This is one of the most common worries, so it is worth answering directly. An empty house simply has no planet in it. The house is then read from its sign and its lord, which are always present. It is not a missing part of your life.

The arithmetic makes the point. A Vedic chart places nine grahas across twelve houses, so every chart has at least three empty houses, and because planets tend to cluster, most charts have more. Venus, the Darakaraka and the Navamsa

Venus is the natural significator of love and marriage, and its sign, house and strength describe what attracts you and how you love. Classical texts also read Jupiter as the significator of a husband in a woman's chart. Many modern astrologers read both planets in every chart.

The Darakaraka comes from the Jaimini system. It is the planet with the lowest degree within its sign, and it is read as a direct indicator of the spouse. It belongs to the same family of indicators as the atmakaraka, explained in chara karakas.

The Navamsa, or D9, is the divisional chart devoted to marriage, and many astrologers treat it as essential to any spouse reading. When you are likely to meet

Timing is read from the dasha system. Periods of the 7th lord, of Venus, of planets placed in the 7th, or of the Darakaraka are traditionally watched as windows for meeting a partner or marrying. Jupiter's transits are layered on top. Jupiter aspects the 5th, 7th and 9th houses counted from wherever it sits, so its movement over the 7th house or its lord, or its aspect onto them, is one of the most watched marriage transits.

What this produces is a range, typically a year or a stretch of a few years, not a date. A reading that names the exact month you will meet someone is claiming more than the method can deliver.

What no chart can tell you

A kundli cannot give you your future spouse's name, their initials, what they look like in any detail you could recognise in a crowd, or the date you will meet. It describes a pattern and a direction. People with the same 7th house marry very different people, because the rest of the chart and the choices made along the way matter as much as the placement.
