Atmakaraka: How to Find It and What It Means

The rule is unusually simple

Most things in a chart depend on sign, house and aspect. The chara karakas depend on one number: how far a planet has travelled into whatever sign it occupies.

Take the seven planets from the Sun to Saturn, ignore which signs they are in, and rank them purely by degree within the sign, highest first. The planet at the highest degree is your Atmakaraka. The one at the lowest is your Darakaraka. The five in between fill the remaining roles in order.

That is genuinely all there is to the calculation. A planet at 28 degrees of a sign outranks one at 3 degrees regardless of dignity, house or anything else. It is one of the few things in Jyotish you can work out from a chart in about ten seconds.

The word chara means moveable, which is the point: these karakas change from chart to chart, unlike the naisargika or natural karakas where the Sun always signifies the father and Venus always signifies the spouse. Both systems are used, and they can point at different planets in the same chart.

The seven karakas and what each governs

In descending order of degree: Atmakaraka for the soul and the self, Amatyakaraka for career and the counsel you rely on, Bhratrikaraka for siblings and teachers, Matrikaraka for the mother, Putrakaraka for children and creativity, Gnatikaraka for obstacles, rivals and the things you have to overcome, and Darakaraka for the spouse and partnership.

The Atmakaraka carries the most weight by a distance. Jaimini treats it as the significator of the soul, and the standard reading is that it describes the central lesson the life is organised around. The condition of that planet matters more than its comfort: a difficult Atmakaraka is not bad luck, it is the subject of the syllabus. An afflicted Saturn as Atmakaraka describes a life whose lesson is endurance and structure, and the affliction is part of the teaching rather than a flaw in it.

The Darakaraka is the one people ask about second, since it describes the spouse. Both are read alongside the natural karakas rather than instead of them, so a chart can have Venus as the natural significator of marriage and an entirely different planet as Darakaraka, and a full reading looks at both.

Where the schools disagree

You will find two versions of this list and it is worth knowing which one you are looking at.

The seven-karaka scheme uses the Sun through Saturn only, and is the one described above. The eight-karaka scheme adds Rahu, with a wrinkle: because Rahu always moves backwards through the zodiac, its degree is counted in reverse, meaning 30 minus its actual degree in the sign. Adding an eighth body means an eighth role, and the eight-karaka lists insert Pitrikaraka for the father, which shifts several positions in the middle of the sequence.

So the same chart can give you a different Matrikaraka or Putrakaraka depending on which school your software follows, while the Atmakaraka usually stays the same unless Rahu happens to hold the top slot.

I use the seven-karaka scheme here because it is the more common default and the simpler one to verify by hand. If a reading you have been given disagrees with what you calculate, check whether it counted Rahu before assuming either is wrong.

Two worked examples

It is easier to see than to describe, so here are two charts already published on this site, run through the seven-karaka rule.

Cristiano Ronaldo, born 5 February 1985: his Sun sits at 22.72 degrees of Capricorn, the highest degree of any of the seven planets in his chart, so the Sun is his Atmakaraka. The Sun signifies authority, ego, visibility and the self, which is about as on the nose as this technique gets. His Darakaraka, at the lowest degree, is Saturn at 3.71 degrees of Scorpio.

Lionel Messi, born 24 June 1987: his Mars sits at 28.44 degrees of Gemini, the highest in his chart, making Mars his Atmakaraka. That is a less obvious result than Ronaldo's and a more interesting one, since Mars signifies drive, competition and courage rather than the grace his chart is otherwise full of. His Darakaraka is Jupiter at 1.27 degrees of Aries.

Both of these come out of the same calculation the app runs, using the same birth data as their chart pages. Note that neither depends on the birth time, since degrees within a sign barely move over a day for everything except the Moon. That makes the karakas unusually robust for celebrity charts where the time is uncertain.
