Ask this question anywhere and you get the same answer: look for a link between the 5th house and the 7th.

The logic is clean. The 5th house signifies romance, attraction and affairs of the heart. The 7th signifies marriage and the spouse. So if the two are connected, the reasoning goes, the romance and the marriage are the same relationship, which is a love marriage. If they are not connected, romance and marriage are separate matters, which points to a match arranged through family.

The connection can take several forms. The 5th lord sitting in the 7th house or the 7th lord in the 5th. The two lords conjunct, aspecting each other, or exchanging signs, which is called parivartana. Venus, the natural significator of love, involved with either house. Or Rahu with Venus or in the 7th, which is traditionally read as an unconventional union, meaning one outside the expected caste, community, religion or family approval.

A chart with none of those links, and with Jupiter or Saturn as the dominant influence on the 7th, gets read the other way: a marriage arranged in the conventional manner, often later and often through family networks.

How much weight that rule can actually carry

Here is the part most articles skip, and I would rather tell you than let you find out later.

The 5th-to-7th rule is a synthesis built from house significations. It is internally coherent and it is what practising astrologers use, but it is not a rule stated in that form in the classical texts. Parashara and Varahamihira discuss the 7th house, the spouse, marital happiness and specific planetary combinations at length. They do not frame the question as love marriage against arranged marriage, largely because that distinction as we mean it today is a modern social category rather than an ancient one.

That does not make the rule useless. Modern synthesis is how a living tradition adapts. But you should hold it more loosely than a verse-backed rule, and you should be suspicious of anyone who quotes it with total certainty or attaches a percentage to it.

The second limit is bigger. Whether you have a love marriage depends enormously on where you live, your family, your community and the decade you were born into. A chart cannot see any of that. The same 5th-to-7th link in two people from different families produces very different outcomes, and the chart is the smaller variable.

What the chart is genuinely better at

Reframe the question and it becomes answerable.

The chart is reasonably good at describing the character of your relationships: whether you are drawn to intensity or stability, whether the 7th house is easy or effortful for you, whether Venus is dignified and comfortable or under pressure. That describes what marriage tends to feel like for you, which is more useful than a label.

It is also considerably better at timing than at category. Marriage tends to arrive during the dasha of a planet connected to the 7th house or its lord, or of Venus, and Vedic astrology puts more real weight on that than on predicting the manner of the meeting. If your actual question is when rather than how, the chart has more to say.

Most people asking this are not curious about astrology. They are in a specific situation, usually one where a family is pushing one way and their heart is pushing the other, and they are hoping the chart will settle it.

It will not, and I would be careful with anyone who says it does. A chart that shows a 5th-to-7th link is not permission, and a chart without one is not a prohibition. Both readings get used to justify decisions that were already made, which is the least honest use of a birth chart.

What the chart can genuinely offer here is a description of the pattern you tend to repeat in relationships and the periods when things are more likely to move. That is worth having. A verdict on whether to marry a particular person is not something any chart contains.
