Gun Milan
Also known as: Guna Milan, Kundli Matching, Ashtakoot Milan
Gun milan is the traditional Vedic compatibility check for marriage, scoring two birth charts on 8 attributes (the ashtakoot) out of a maximum 36 points.
Gun milan compares the moon signs and nakshatras of the prospective bride and groom across the eight kootas. The total of all eight koota scores produces the matching number. Conventionally, 18 or above is acceptable, 24 or above is considered a good match, and above 30 is excellent. Two of the eight kootas — Bhakoot and Nadi — are treated as more critical than the raw score: a 'Nadi dosha' (both partners share the same nadi) or 'Bhakoot dosha' is traditionally considered a serious issue even at high totals. Modern practice often weighs these alongside other chart factors (manglik status, 7th house, Venus and Jupiter conditions) rather than relying on the score alone.
