Ashtakoot

The eight kootas (compatibility attributes) are: Varna (work nature, 1 point), Vashya (mutual control, 2), Tara (health and wellbeing, 3), Yoni (sexual and instinctive compatibility, 4), Graha Maitri (mental compatibility, 5), Gana (temperament, 6), Bhakoot (emotional and family bond, 7), and Nadi (genetic and progeny health, 8). The maximum total is 36 points. Each koota is calculated from the moon nakshatra and moon sign of the two charts. Scores above 18 are considered acceptable, above 24 good, above 30 excellent. Two factors (Bhakoot and Nadi) are weighted heavily because traditional astrology treats failures here as more serious than a low total.
