Mulank (Psychic Number): How to Calculate It and What Each Number Means
How to calculate your Mulank
Take only the day of the month you were born. Ignore the month and the year — those go into your Bhagyank calculation. If your birth day is already a single digit (1 through 9), that’s your Mulank as it is. If it’s a two-digit day, add the digits until you get a single digit between 1 and 9.
Examples:
- Born on the 5th — Mulank is 5.
- Born on the 14th — 1+4 = 5. Mulank is 5.
- Born on the 23rd — 2+3 = 5. Mulank is 5.
- Born on the 28th — 2+8 = 10, 1+0 = 1. Mulank is 1.
- Born on the 19th — 1+9 = 10, 1+0 = 1. Mulank is 1.
Note that the month and the year change nothing here. Everyone born on the 14th of any month in any year has Mulank 5. Your Bhagyank is what differentiates two people who share a Mulank.
Why Mulank is “psychic”
The Mulank is called the psychic number because it captures who you are before anything else acts on you. It shows up in your default reactions, your body language, your first move in a new situation. People close to you tend to recognise your Mulank traits within a few weeks of meeting you. Strangers may not see it at all — that’s usually your Naamank (name number), which is more public-facing.
The other Indian name for Mulank is janma ank — literally “birth number.” This points to the same idea: the day of birth carries the planetary signature of the moment your soul, in the traditional framing, entered this body.
The nine Mulank meanings
Each Mulank section below includes the planetary ruler, a short read on the personality, how to read it against your actual kundli, and traditional recommendations for daily colours and the gemstone associated with that Mulank’s ruling planet.
A note on the colour and stone recommendations. Colours are the low-cost, low-commitment way to lean into your Mulank’s energy — wear them on important days for that number (interviews, presentations, weddings, the day of the planet’s mahadasha starting). Stones are the more committed version: they should be set in the correct metal, worn on the correct finger, and activated on the correct day. Blue Sapphire (Mulank 8) requires a three-day trial before long-term wear — it amplifies whatever Saturn is doing in your chart, which can help or hurt depending on the placement. Treat all of this as a soft tool, not a fix for a hard chart.
Mulank 1 — Ruled by the Sun
Number 1s lead from the front. You walk in expecting to be taken seriously, and most of the time you are. Independent, original, decisive. The downside is that you don't take direction well, and the people who try to manage you often end up feeling redundant. Born on the 1st, 10th, 19th, or 28th.
With your chart: Look at where your Sun sits. A 1st-house or 10th-house Sun amplifies the Mulank — you get the public-facing leadership traits in their strong form. A 12th-house or debilitated Sun (in Libra) softens the Mulank — the same person can be a quiet, internally-driven 1 rather than the obvious alpha.
Colours to wear: Deep red, gold, burnt orange, copper. Avoid heavy black for important days.
Lucky stone: Ruby (Manik) — set in gold, worn on the ring finger of the right hand. Best activated on a Sunday morning.
Mulank 2 — Ruled by the Moon
Number 2s read rooms. You pick up emotional currents other people miss, you adjust your behaviour to fit the situation, and you partner well with almost anyone if the relationship is honest. The downside is that you absorb other people's moods to your own cost, and you can stall on hard decisions because you see every side. Born on the 2nd, 11th, 20th, or 29th.
With your chart: Find your Moon. A strong Moon (in Cancer, Taurus, or near the Ascendant) gives a steady 2 — sensitive but anchored. A weak Moon (in Scorpio, or close to malefics like Saturn or Rahu) gives a 2 that is more anxious and reactive. Moon mahadasha years are usually the most defining for a Mulank 2.
Colours to wear: White, cream, off-white, silver, very pale blue. Avoid harsh reds and blacks on emotionally heavy days.
Lucky stone: Pearl (Moti) — set in silver, worn on the little finger of the right hand. Best activated on a Monday evening.
Mulank 3 — Ruled by Jupiter
Number 3s are teachers, even if their job title says something else. You explain things well, you read widely, and people end up taking your advice without quite remembering when they asked for it. Optimistic, generous, sometimes preachy. The downside is that you can talk a plan to death instead of executing it. Born on the 3rd, 12th, 21st, or 30th.
With your chart: Locate Jupiter. Jupiter in the 1st, 5th, 9th, or 10th house gives the classical 3 — the wise, well-regarded teacher figure. Jupiter combust (close to the Sun) or in the 6th, 8th, or 12th house creates a more inward 3 — the person whose wisdom shows up in private conversations rather than on a stage.
Colours to wear: Yellow, mustard, gold, light orange, cream. Useful in interviews, exams, and any setting where you want to be heard.
Lucky stone: Yellow Sapphire (Pukhraj) — set in gold, worn on the index finger of the right hand. Best activated on a Thursday morning.
Mulank 4 — Ruled by Rahu
Number 4s do things the rest of us aren't sure are possible. Unconventional, materially focused, often drawn to tech, foreign work, or industries that didn't exist a decade ago. You're persistent in ways that look stubborn until they pay off. The downside is restlessness — Rahu is never satisfied, and 4s can spend a lifetime climbing without ever pausing to enjoy. Born on the 4th, 13th, 22nd, or 31st.
With your chart: Rahu's position is the whole story. Rahu in the 10th house gives a 4 that succeeds publicly and unconventionally. Rahu in the 7th creates intense, sometimes turbulent partnerships. Rahu in the 6th gives the 4 unusual stamina at work but health that needs watching. Pay attention to whatever house Rahu sits in — that's where your 4 plays out hardest. See our glossary entry for Rahu.
Colours to wear: Smoky grey, honey-brown, dark navy, deep maroon. Earth tones generally help — avoid pure white on big days.
Lucky stone: Hessonite Garnet (Gomed) — set in silver, worn on the middle finger of the right hand. Best activated on a Saturday at sunset.
Mulank 5 — Ruled by Mercury
Number 5s think fast and talk faster. Adaptable, curious, good at picking up new skills, often working in communication, sales, writing, or coding. You get bored easily, which is both your superpower and the reason you have four half-finished projects right now. Born on the 5th, 14th, or 23rd.
With your chart: Mercury's placement matters most. Mercury in the 3rd or 10th house gives the classical communicator-5 — writer, salesperson, broadcaster. Mercury debilitated (in Pisces) or stuck in the 6th or 12th creates a more thoughtful, behind-the-scenes 5 — the editor rather than the author, the analyst rather than the presenter.
Colours to wear: Green (all shades), olive, light blue, soft teal. Strong choice for communication-heavy days — pitches, presentations, exams.
Lucky stone: Emerald (Panna) — set in gold, worn on the little finger of the right hand. Best activated on a Wednesday morning.
Mulank 6 — Ruled by Venus
Number 6s build beautiful things and beautiful relationships. Family-oriented, artistic, and unusually warm — you remember birthdays, you cook for people, you make the room feel hosted. The downside is a habit of taking on responsibility that isn't yours, and a tendency to attract people who lean on you. Born on the 6th, 15th, or 24th.
With your chart: Find Venus. A strong Venus (in Taurus, Libra, or Pisces, or in the 4th, 5th, or 7th houses) gives the warm-hearted, naturally loved 6. Venus afflicted by Saturn or Mars creates a 6 whose love life takes longer to settle. Read the full breakdown of Venus by house in our guide to Venus in each house.
Colours to wear: White, soft pink, sky blue, lavender, pastels. Pure white especially helps on Fridays and during important relationship moments.
Lucky stone: Diamond (Heera) or, as an affordable substitute, White Zircon — set in platinum or white gold, worn on the middle finger of the right hand. Best activated on a Friday morning.
Mulank 7 — Ruled by Ketu
Number 7s go deep. Spiritually inclined, observant, often quiet in groups and intense one-on-one. You can read people but rarely show what you've read. The downside is detachment — 7s can lose interest in things (and people) suddenly, leaving them looking unreliable when really they've just moved on internally. Born on the 7th, 16th, or 25th.
With your chart: Ketu's position rewrites the meaning of a 7. Ketu in the 9th gives the natural mystic — the 7 who actually lives the spiritual life the number promises. Ketu in the 7th creates the most challenging marriage placement — sudden disinterest in partnership. Ketu in the 12th gives a 7 who is genuinely at home alone, often working in research, healing, or anything offline. See our glossary entry for Ketu.
Colours to wear: Earth tones — muted browns, olive, dusty grey, variegated patterns. Avoid bright primary colours, which fight the Ketu mood.
Lucky stone: Cat's Eye (Lehsunia) — set in silver, worn on the middle finger of the right hand. Best activated on a Tuesday at twilight. Especially recommended when Ketu mahadasha is running.
Mulank 8 — Ruled by Saturn
Number 8s do the long, hard thing. Ambitious, disciplined, and often the last person standing in a room of quitters. You're built for marathons. The downside is that early life is rarely easy for an 8 — Saturn makes you earn it — and the karmic intensity of the number means you tend to attract situations that test exactly your weakest spot. Born on the 8th, 17th, or 26th.
With your chart: Saturn's strength is everything. Saturn in its own signs (Capricorn, Aquarius) or exalted (Libra) gives the powerful, late-blooming 8 who arrives at success after 35 and holds it. Saturn weak or afflicted gives the more karmically heavy 8 — repeated setbacks, especially in the first Saturn return around age 28. Sade sati periods hit 8s the hardest of any Mulank.
Colours to wear: Black, dark navy, deep charcoal, midnight blue. Saturday is the strongest day for wearing the colour palette.
Lucky stone: Blue Sapphire (Neelam) — set in silver or panchdhatu, worn on the middle finger of the right hand. Critical: test for three days before committing. Neelam amplifies whatever Saturn is doing in your chart, so a poorly placed Saturn means it can hurt rather than help. If the trial brings sleep disturbance, accidents, or sudden setbacks, return it. If life feels steadier, keep wearing.
Mulank 9 — Ruled by Mars
Number 9s are warriors, even when they're working in HR. High energy, direct, often physically active, drawn to causes you can fight for. You forgive but you don't forget. The downside is temper — 9s can flatten a room when they're angry and regret it for weeks. Born on the 9th, 18th, or 27th.
With your chart: Mars's placement defines the 9. Mars in the 1st, 6th, or 10th gives the classical 9 — the athlete, soldier, surgeon, entrepreneur. Mars debilitated (in Cancer) or afflicted gives a more frustrated 9 — same energy, but turned inward as irritability. Mangal Dosh affects 9s more visibly than most.
Colours to wear: Red, deep crimson, coral, maroon, terracotta. Use on competition days, presentations, anything that calls for visible energy.
Lucky stone: Red Coral (Moonga) — set in gold or copper, worn on the ring finger of the right hand. Best activated on a Tuesday morning. Particularly helpful for managing Mangal Dosh.
What if my Mulank doesn’t feel right?
Two things to check. First, did you calculate correctly? Use only the day of the month, not the full date. Second, is your Mulank’s ruling planet weak or afflicted in your chart? A Mulank 1 with a debilitated Sun, or a Mulank 8 with a deeply afflicted Saturn, can feel like the opposite of the textbook description. The number is still there, but the planet running it isn’t projecting cleanly.
The other possibility is that your Bhagyank is dominating. Some people live their destiny number rather than their psychic number — usually those past their first Saturn return (age ~28), since Bhagyank tends to take over with age.
Mulank compatibility
Indian numerology has informal compatibility rules for Mulank pairings. They’re less precise than Gun Milan (which uses both charts in full), but they’re useful as a first-pass read:
- 1 and 4 — Sun and Rahu. Visionary partnership. Risk of ego clashes.
- 2 and 7 — Moon and Ketu. Deep emotional resonance. Risk of moodiness.
- 3 and 6 — Jupiter and Venus. Warm, intellectually compatible. Low conflict.
- 3 and 9 — Jupiter and Mars. High energy, high productivity. Risk of pushing each other too hard.
- 1 and 8 — Sun and Saturn. Authority vs discipline. Hard but can work if the 8 has matured.
- 4 and 8 — Rahu and Saturn. Often avoided in traditional matching. Both karmically heavy.
For a proper marriage compatibility check, use free gun milan matching — it reads both kundlis on eight attributes and gives a 36-point score.
A quick calibration exercise
The fastest way to feel whether Mulank descriptions actually track reality: pick five people you know well — a parent, a sibling, a close friend, a colleague, a partner — and calculate each of their Mulanks. Read the relevant description above. Don’t look at the planet’s position in their chart yet; just read the pure-Mulank description.
Most people find that three or four of the five descriptions land cleanly. The one or two that don’t are usually people whose ruling planet sits in an unusual position in their kundli — that’s where the chart cross-product comes in. Either way, calibrating on people you actually know is a more useful exercise than scanning a celebrity list.
