The finger comes from palmistry rather than from planetary calculation: each finger carries a planetary association, and the stone goes on the finger of the planet it strengthens.

Index is Jupiter, middle is Saturn, ring is the Sun, little is Mercury. The remaining grahas are fitted around those four. The thumb is not used for this in any lineage.

Metal follows the same logic. Gold for the warm planets, the Sun, Jupiter and Mars. Silver for the cool ones, the Moon, Venus and Saturn. The metal is considered part of the remedy rather than a setting choice, which is why a recommendation usually names both.

Where the lineages disagree

Three points are genuinely contested, and anyone who tells you there is one answer is overstating it.

Venus. Some place diamond on the middle finger, others the ring finger, and platinum is a modern addition to the silver recommendation.

The Moon. Pearl is placed on the little finger in some traditions and the ring finger in others.

The hand. A common rule gives the right hand to men and the left to women. Another gives the working hand to everyone, on the reasoning that the stone should touch the skin of the hand you use. Both are widely taught.

Where the tradition disagrees with itself, the honest answer is that the detail is convention rather than mechanism.

The day, and what it is for

Each stone has a weekday for first wearing, matching the planet's day: Sunday for the Sun, Monday for the Moon, and so on. The instruction is about beginning, not about wearing it only on that day.

Practically it functions as a commitment device. It fixes a start, which is what makes the difference between a stone that gets worn and one that sits in a drawer. That is worth something regardless of what you believe about the mechanism.

Morning, before or shortly after sunrise, is the usual instruction, and the stone is normally cleaned before first wearing.

The finger is the smallest decision here

Ranked by how much it changes, the order is: which planet you strengthen, then the quality and size of the stone, then the metal, then the finger, then the day.

Most of the advice online inverts that, because the finger and the day are easy to write about and the planet requires your chart. Getting the finger right on the wrong stone is a precise answer to the wrong question, and for a malefic ruling difficult houses in your chart it can be worse than doing nothing.
