Lagna

Also known as: Ascendant, Rising sign

The lagna is the zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon at the exact minute of birth — the starting point of your Vedic birth chart and the basis for the 1st bhava.

Because the Earth rotates once every 24 hours, the lagna shifts to a new sign roughly every two hours. This is why birth time accuracy matters so much in Vedic astrology — a four-minute error can be invisible, but a half-hour error can move your lagna into a different sign and change the entire chart layout. The lagna determines: which sign sits in your 1st bhava, the natural sequence of all 12 bhavas, the 'lagna lord' (the planet ruling the lagna sign) which is treated as your most personally significant planet, and the entire dasha-bhukti reading. Vedic astrology generally treats the lagna as more defining of personality than the sun sign — the opposite of popular Western astrology.
