The four places to look

The 10th house sign and its lord describe the shape of the work. Where that lord sits, and how strong it is, matters more than the sign alone.

Planets aspecting or occupying the 10th colour it. A 10th house touched by Mercury reads differently from the same house touched by Saturn, even in the same sign.

The Amatyakaraka, the second-highest planet by degree in the chara karaka scheme, is read specifically for career and counsel in Jaimini. It often names the flavour of the work more precisely than the 10th lord does.

The Dashamsha, the tenth divisional chart, is the one classically used for profession. A reading that never looks at D-10 is working from a quarter of the available information.

What each planet traditionally governs

Sun: authority, government, administration, medicine, anything where your name carries the responsibility.

Moon: the public, care, hospitality, liquids, and work whose rhythm changes.

Mars: engineering, surgery, defence, sport, land, and anything built or cut.

Mercury: commerce, writing, analysis, accounting, teaching, and all intermediary work.

Jupiter: law, finance, advisory, teaching, and institutions.

Venus: design, arts, performance, luxury, and anything judged on how it looks or feels.

Saturn: labour, service, mining, structure, and work that pays over a long cycle rather than quickly.

Rahu and Ketu take the character of what influences them, and Rahu in particular appears in charts tied to new or unconventional fields.

How far this can honestly be narrowed

These correspondences describe categories, not jobs. A 10th house read as Mercury with Jupiter support points at analysis inside an institution. That is consistent with accountancy, with policy research, with teaching economics, and with half a dozen other things.

The tradition is better at ruling things out than naming one thing. A chart with no Venus involvement anywhere near the 10th rarely belongs to someone who sustains a career on aesthetics alone.

Where a reading claims to name your job title, it has stopped reading and started guessing. The useful output is a direction and a short list, which is also what a careers adviser would give you.

Why the same chart changes field

People change careers, and their charts do not change. The dasha does.

Running a Mercury period often coincides with work becoming more analytical or commercial, and a Saturn period with it becoming more structural and slower. The 10th house is fixed; which part of it is active is not.

This is why a reading done at 22 and the same chart read at 38 can point at different fields without either being wrong, and why career advice from a chart has a shelf life.

For the arrangement rather than the field, business or job covers which one your chart supports. Reading career in your kundli is the broader walkthrough.

The traditional planet-to-field correspondences. These are categories, not job titles, and most charts involve several.

Frequently asked questions

Which house shows career in Vedic astrology?

The 10th house, read through its sign, its lord, and the planets influencing it. For a more precise reading the tradition adds the Amatyakaraka from the chara karakas and the Dashamsha (D-10) divisional chart, which is the chart classically used for profession.

What is the Amatyakaraka and why does it matter for career?

It is the planet with the second-highest degree in the chara karaka scheme, and in Jaimini astrology it signifies career, counsel and the people you rely on. It often describes the flavour of the work more precisely than the 10th lord, which is why a career reading that skips it is working with less than it could.

Can astrology tell me exactly what job to do?

No. The correspondences give categories, so a Mercury-led 10th house is consistent with accountancy, policy research or teaching economics equally. The tradition is better at ruling out directions than naming one. A reading that produces a job title has added certainty that is not in the framework.

What is the D-10 chart?

The Dashamsha, a divisional chart made by dividing each sign into ten parts, used specifically for profession and status. It is read alongside the main chart rather than instead of it, and a career reading that never consults it is using a fraction of the available detail.

Why did my career change if my chart did not?

Because the dasha changed. A Mercury period often coincides with work turning analytical or commercial, a Saturn period with it turning structural and slower. The 10th house is fixed, which part of it is active is not, which is why career readings have a shelf life.

My 10th house is empty. Does that mean no career?

No. An empty house is read through its lord and through any planet aspecting it, which is the normal case rather than a problem. Most charts have several empty houses and it carries no negative meaning on its own.
