A rashi is a 30-degree slice, not a personality label
Rashi simply means a division or heap. The zodiac is a 360-degree circle, and it is cut into twelve equal parts of exactly 30 degrees each. Each part is a rashi.
The arithmetic is worth stating because it is the part people skip. Twelve rashis of thirty degrees each account for the full 360, with no gaps and no overlaps. A planet at 47 degrees of ecliptic longitude is at 17 degrees of Vrishabha, because the first thirty belong to Mesha and the second thirty to Vrishabha. Nothing is fuzzy about it.
The names are the same twelve signs the West uses, because both systems inherited them from the same source. Mesha is Aries, Vrishabha is Taurus, and so on down the list. What differs is where the circle is anchored, which is the next section.
Why your rashi is probably not the sign you know
Western astrology measures from the spring equinox. Indian astrology measures from the fixed stars. Those two starting points lined up around seventeen centuries ago and have been drifting apart ever since, at roughly one degree every 72 years. The accumulated gap is called the ayanamsha and it is currently about 24 degrees.
Twenty-four degrees is most of a sign. So for the majority of people the rashi is one sign earlier than the Western sun sign they grew up with. Roughly speaking, if you were born in about the first three weeks of your Western sign, your rashi is the previous one.
This is not a disagreement about interpretation. Both systems are internally consistent and both compute correctly from their own zero point. They are answering the same question from different reference frames.
When Indians say rashi they usually mean the Moon
This is the part that confuses people arriving from Western astrology, where the sign means the Sun sign by default.
In Indian practice the important rashi is the Chandra rashi, the sign the Moon occupied at birth. The Moon changes sign every two and a quarter days or so, which is why it needs a birth date and not just a birth month. Newspaper and television horoscopes in India are written for Moon signs. Marriage matching is done from Moon signs. The entire Vimshottari dasha timeline is calculated from the Moon's exact position.
The Sun sign exists and is read, but it is not what the word rashi points at in ordinary conversation. If a relative asks your rashi, they want the Moon.
There is a third one worth knowing: the Lagna rashi, the sign rising on the eastern horizon at your birth. That one changes roughly every two hours and defines the house structure of the whole chart.
The twelve, with their rulers
Each rashi is ruled by a planet, and the ruler matters more in Indian astrology than it typically does in Western practice, because so much of the technique runs on house lordship rather than on sign character.
Notice the symmetry in the table below. The Sun and Moon rule one sign each, Simha and Karka. Every other planet rules two, arranged symmetrically outward from those. Mercury takes Mithuna and Kanya, Venus takes Vrishabha and Tula, Mars takes Mesha and Vrischika, Jupiter takes Dhanu and Meena, Saturn takes Makara and Kumbha. Rahu and Ketu rule no sign at all.
The element and quality columns are the classical groupings. Elements run fire, earth, air, water in a repeating cycle of four. Qualities run movable, fixed and dual in a repeating cycle of three. Because four and three have no common factor, every rashi ends up with a unique element-quality pair, which is one of the tidier pieces of structure in the system.

Frequently asked questions
What is a rashi?
A rashi is one of the twelve signs of the sidereal zodiac used in Indian astrology, each spanning exactly 30 degrees of the 360-degree circle. The twelve are Mesha, Vrishabha, Mithuna, Karka, Simha, Kanya, Tula, Vrischika, Dhanu, Makara, Kumbha and Meena, corresponding to Aries through Pisces.
Is my rashi my sun sign or my moon sign?
In Indian practice it is almost always the Moon sign, called the Chandra rashi. Newspaper horoscopes in India are written for Moon signs, marriage matching is done from Moon signs, and the dasha timeline is calculated from the Moon's exact position. If a relative asks your rashi, they mean the Moon.
Why is my rashi different from my zodiac sign?
Because the two systems measure from different starting points. Western astrology anchors to the spring equinox, Indian astrology to the fixed stars, and the two have drifted about 24 degrees apart. That is most of a sign, so for most people the rashi is one sign earlier than the familiar Western sun sign. As a rough rule, if you were born in the first three weeks of your Western sign, your rashi is the previous one.
Which planet rules each rashi?
Mars rules Mesha and Vrischika, Venus rules Vrishabha and Tula, Mercury rules Mithuna and Kanya, the Moon rules Karka, the Sun rules Simha, Jupiter rules Dhanu and Meena, and Saturn rules Makara and Kumbha. The Sun and Moon rule one sign each; every other planet rules two. Rahu and Ketu rule none.
How many degrees is each rashi?
Exactly 30. Twelve rashis of 30 degrees account for the full 360-degree circle with no gaps or overlaps, so a planet's rashi is simply its ecliptic longitude divided into 30-degree blocks. A planet at 47 degrees is at 17 degrees of Vrishabha.
