Hora: Why a Planetary Hour Is Almost Never 60 Minutes

The claim, stated plainly

A planetary hour is not an hour. It is a twelfth of however long the sun happens to be up where you are standing.

This is the part most planetary hour content gets wrong, and it is not a small error. If you take a clock day, cut it into twenty-four sixty-minute blocks, and label them with planets, then the first block is roughly right and every block after it drifts. By the end of a summer day in a northern city the error exceeds two hours, which means the planet you think is ruling is two or three planets away from the one the classical method gives.

The rule is simple. Sunrise to sunset, divided by twelve, gives the length of a daytime hora. Sunset to the next sunrise, divided by twelve, gives the length of a night hora. The two are equal only when day and night are equal, which happens twice a year.

What that looks like in real numbers

The table below is computed rather than quoted, using standard NOAA sunrise and sunset figures for each location. Every pair is the length in minutes of a daytime hora and a night hora on the same date.

Read the London row first. On 21 June a single daytime hora lasts 83 minutes, and the night horas that follow it last 37. That is a ratio of more than two to one inside one day. Six months later the pattern reverses exactly. Delhi is milder at 70 and 50, Chennai milder still at 64 and 56, and Singapore barely moves at all because it sits within a degree and a half of the equator.

Notice the 22 September column. Every city reads 60 and 60. That is the equinox, the one date where a hora and a clock hour genuinely coincide, and it is a useful check on any tool you are using: if it does not produce sixty minutes at the equinox and something other than sixty at the solstice, it is not computing horas.

Why the weekdays are named after planets

The horas run in what is called the Chaldean order, which lists the seven classical planets by apparent speed, slowest first: Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Sun, Venus, Mercury, Moon. The first hora after sunrise belongs to the lord of that weekday. Sunday opens on the Sun, Monday on the Moon, Tuesday on Mars, and so on.

Now do the arithmetic. A day holds twenty-four horas, and the cycle has seven planets. Twenty-four divided by seven leaves a remainder of three, so the next day's opening hora lands three places further along the Chaldean order. Start at the Sun and count three: Venus, Mercury, Moon. The Moon. Which is why Sunday is followed by Monday.

Run it again from the Moon and you get Mars, which is Tuesday, Mangalavara in Sanskrit and mardi in French. The whole week falls out of one modular arithmetic step, and it does so identically in Sanskrit, Latin, and the Germanic names English inherited. The names of the days of the week are a fossil of this calculation. That is a stronger claim than most astrological ones, because it is checkable in about a minute with a pen.

What each planet's hora is used for

The activity attached to each hora comes from that planet's karaka, its role as significator, carried across without embellishment.

Mercury governs speech, intellect and commerce, so its hora is the traditional window for negotiation, correspondence, accounts and study. Venus governs art, beauty and harmony, so its hora suits creative work, design, and anything judged on how it looks or feels. Jupiter governs wisdom and counsel, so its hora is used for teaching, seeking advice, and commitments meant to last.

The Sun governs authority and the self, making its hora the one for decisions you have to own. Mars governs energy and courage, for work that has to be forced through. Saturn governs discipline, endurance and solitude, which suits patient repetitive work, though it is classically avoided for starting anything new. The Moon governs mind and emotion, and its hora suits recovery, unstructured thinking, and conversations that need care rather than pressure.

Cutting across all of this is Rahu Kaal, one eighth of the daylight span, falling at a different position each weekday and traditionally avoided for beginnings. It does not replace the hora grid, it overlaps it, so an otherwise favourable hora can still fall inside it.

Where hora advice goes wrong

Three failures are common and all three are avoidable.

The first is the fixed sixty-minute grid described above. It is the most common and the most consequential, because it silently misattributes most of the day.

The second is using midnight as the start of the day. The Vedic day begins at sunrise, so a hora table anchored to midnight is misaligned from its first row. This also means the horas between midnight and sunrise belong to the previous day's sequence, which is a detail that trips up otherwise careful tools.

The third is treating a hora as a promise. A Mercury hora does not make a negotiation succeed. The claim the tradition actually makes is narrower and more defensible: it is a scheduling convention, a way of assigning a kind of work to a slot, and its main practical benefit is that it gives you a reason to stop doing one thing and start another. Is there any evidence that horas work?

No controlled study has shown that planetary hours affect outcomes, and this page does not claim otherwise. What can be defended is narrower: the hora is a well-documented classical scheduling convention with an internally consistent arithmetic that also explains the naming of the weekdays. Used as a way of assigning kinds of work to slots in a day, it is a scheduling habit rather than a prediction.
