Why the free remedies are rated highest
Gemstones get the attention because they can be sold. The classical texts are less impressed by them than the market is. Mantra japa, daan and conduct appear throughout the tradition as the primary means of working with a difficult placement, and gemstones as a support rather than the foundation.
There is a practical reason too. A gemstone is a one-way bet: if you strengthen the wrong planet for your ascendant, the tradition holds that you amplify the difficulty. A mantra and a charity carry no such risk, which is why they are the sensible place to start while you are still confirming which planet your chart actually needs.
The weekday and charity for each planet
Each planet owns a day of the week, and the traditional daan for that planet is given on its day, usually in the morning, to someone who genuinely needs it. The giving matters more than the item.
Sun, Sunday: wheat, jaggery, copper. Moon, Monday: rice, milk, white cloth, silver. Mars, Tuesday: red lentils (masoor), red cloth, jaggery. Mercury, Wednesday: green gram (moong), green cloth, books. Jupiter, Thursday: turmeric, chana dal, yellow cloth, ghee. Venus, Friday: white cloth, curd, rice, sugar. Saturn, Saturday: black sesame (til), black cloth, iron, mustard oil. Rahu: mustard oil and blankets, traditionally on Saturday. Ketu: blankets and sesame, traditionally on Tuesday.
Mantra: the count matters more than the volume
Each planet has a beej (seed) mantra and a longer Vedic mantra. The beej mantras are the ones usually prescribed for daily practice: Om Hraam Hreem Hraum Sah Suryaya Namah for the Sun, Om Shraam Shreem Shraum Sah Chandraya Namah for the Moon, Om Kraam Kreem Kraum Sah Bhaumaya Namah for Mars, Om Braam Breem Braum Sah Budhaya Namah for Mercury, Om Graam Greem Graum Sah Gurave Namah for Jupiter, Om Draam Dreem Draum Sah Shukraya Namah for Venus, Om Praam Preem Praum Sah Shanaye Namah for Saturn, Om Bhraam Bhreem Bhraum Sah Rahave Namah for Rahu, and Om Sraam Sreem Sraum Sah Ketave Namah for Ketu.
The traditional prescription is a fixed daily count, commonly 108 repetitions, kept up rather than done intensely once. A practice you can sustain for a whole sub-period is worth more than a marathon you abandon in a fortnight.
Conduct: the remedy nobody sells you
Every planet governs a domain of behaviour, and the tradition holds that acting in accordance with that domain supports the planet directly. This is the least commercial remedy and the one most often left out.
Saturn is served by discipline, punctuality, service to elderly and manual workers, and by not cutting corners. Jupiter by teaching, honesty and generosity with knowledge. Mars by physical effort and controlled temper rather than suppressed temper. Moon by rest, water, and care of your mother or of women in your family. Mercury by clear speech and keeping your word. Venus by care of your surroundings and by fairness in relationships. Sun by responsibility taken rather than avoided.
Start with the right planet, not the loudest one
All of this is only useful if it is pointed at the planet your chart actually needs strengthened, which is usually your ascendant lord, a yogakaraka for your ascendant, or the planet ruling the period you are running. Strengthening a planet that rules difficult houses for you is the one way these can be misapplied.
If you do not know which planet that is, that is the thing to establish first, and it is read from your ascendant rather than your sun sign.
Frequently asked questions
What is the cheapest effective Vedic remedy?
Mantra japa and daan (charity), both of which cost nothing or nearly nothing and are rated above gemstones in classical practice. Each planet has a beej mantra with a traditional daily count, usually 108, and a traditional charity given on that planet's weekday.
Which day is for which planet?
Sunday for the Sun, Monday for the Moon, Tuesday for Mars, Wednesday for Mercury, Thursday for Jupiter, Friday for Venus and Saturday for Saturn. Rahu is traditionally worked with on Saturday and Ketu on Tuesday. The day is when the planet's charity is given and when a new practice is usually begun.
How many times should I chant a planetary mantra?
The common prescription is 108 repetitions daily, kept up consistently. Some traditions prescribe a total count over a period. Consistency across a whole sub-period matters more than intensity in a single sitting.
Can free remedies replace a gemstone?
In classical practice mantra, charity and conduct are the foundation and a gemstone is a support, so yes, they stand on their own. They also carry none of the risk of strengthening the wrong planet, which is the one way a gemstone can work against you.
Do I need a priest or an astrologer to do these?
No. Mantra japa, daan and conduct are done by the person themselves. What is worth getting right is which planet you are working with, because that is read from your ascendant and your running period rather than from your sun sign.
