The 5th house and why it holds children

The 5th house governs children, creativity and intelligence, and it is also the house of purva punya, the merit carried from the past. The sign on it, its lord and any planets placed there describe how the theme of children plays out in a life: the timing, the relationship with children, and the ease or effort involved.

A 5th house under pressure, from Saturn, Rahu or a weak lord, is traditionally read as delay or effort. It is not read as a verdict. Many people with a difficult 5th house have children, and a chart describes a tendency within a whole life, not a sentence.

Jupiter, the significator of children

Jupiter is the putra karaka, the natural significator of children, and its strength is central to any reading on the subject. Astrologers look at its sign (it is exalted in Cancer, at home in Sagittarius and Pisces, and debilitated in Capricorn), its house, and what it aspects. Jupiter casts its aspect onto the 5th, 7th and 9th houses counted from wherever it sits, so a Jupiter that looks onto the 5th house is traditionally read as protective of the theme.

The 9th house and the D7 chart

The 9th house is the 5th counted from the 5th, and many astrologers read it as a confirming view of the same theme, and sometimes as an indicator of a second child.

The Saptamsa, or D7, is the divisional chart devoted to progeny. It is more detailed than the main chart and correspondingly more sensitive to birth time: the D7 ascendant changes roughly every 17 minutes on average. If your birth time is approximate, treat D7 detail with caution, and see how accurate your birth time needs to be.

How timing is approached

As with every timing question in Vedic astrology, the dasha system does the work. Periods of the 5th lord, of Jupiter, or of planets placed in the 5th house are traditionally watched as supportive windows. Jupiter's transit over the 5th house or its lord, or its aspect onto them, is layered on top. If the terms are new, what a mahadasha is is the place to start.

Traditionally both partners' charts are read, not one, because the question belongs to both of them. And the answer is a range of time, not a date. Anyone who names the month a pregnancy will happen is claiming more than the method can deliver.

What astrology should never do here

Astrology cannot diagnose fertility, and a reading should never be the reason someone delays seeing a doctor. Conception depends on medical factors that a chart does not contain, and many of them are treatable when they are found early.

It also cannot tell you whether a baby will be a boy or a girl, and no one should try. In India, determining a baby's sex before birth is illegal under the PCPNDT Act.
