Panchang
Also known as: Panchanga, Vedic almanac, Hindu calendar
Panchang is the Vedic almanac listing the five daily attributes of any given day — tithi, nakshatra, yoga, karana and var — used to choose auspicious times for important activities.
The five limbs (panch + anga) of the panchang are: tithi (lunar day, 1–30), nakshatra (the moon's current lunar mansion), yoga (a calculation combining sun and moon longitudes, 27 in total), karana (half of a tithi, 11 in total) and var (the weekday, ruled by one of the seven classical planets). A daily panchang also includes auspicious windows (muhurat) and inauspicious windows like Rahu Kaal, Yamaganda and Gulika Kaal. Panchang is consulted before scheduling weddings, business launches, travel, religious rituals and major purchases. Different regional traditions use slightly different panchangs (Drik, Vakya, Surya Siddhanta, Rashtriya), so dates can vary by a day across calendars.
